Electricity production mainly from thermal plants.

With regard to primary electricity production, Metlen owns gas-fired thermal plants located within the country’s south system, as well as RES plants.

The choice of a combined cycle plant is universally accepted as one of the most appropriate for the production of electricity using Natural Gas as combustion fuel, particularly for application in deregulated electricity markets. Combined cycle power plants allow aggregate net efficiency rates which, depending on design, size and fuel, exceed 57% under ISO-compliant operating conditions.

METLEN is already operating since 2008 a 334 MW High Efficiency Combined Heat and Power (CHP/High Efficiency CHP) plant in Ag. Nikolaos, Viotia, while the 444.48 MW Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant (CCGT) in the same area, which was under the commissioning stage since January 2011, entered commercial operation in June 2011. The Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant (CCGT) of 436.6 MW located in Korinthia which was under the commissioning stage since October 2011, entered commercial operation in April 2012.

At the end of 2021, a new state-of-the-art natural gas unit was added to the facilities of the Agios Nikolaos Energy Center in Viotia. With the commencement of its operation in 2022, it enhanced the system with an additional capacity of 826 MW.

The unit is one of the largest, most efficient, and most advanced in Greece, and one of the largest power generation plants in Europe. The 9HA.02 gas turbine from General Electric (GE), the first of the "H" type to be installed in Greece, was placed in the new unit. Once operational, it will deliver 826MW to the grid with 63% thermal efficiency of, contributing to the country's energy security.
